Team Tryouts

At Team Yakima, we prioritize both team and individual success. To ensure a harmonious skill-level grouping, all athletes are required to participate in an annual practice-like tryout session. This allows us to create balanced teams and promote the growth of each player.

What to Expect

Club volleyball tryouts are an exciting and competitive process where players showcase their skills and abilities to earn a spot on a club team. Here's what athletes can expect at our tryouts:

  1. Registration and Check-In: Players are required to pre-register for tryouts and pay a $25 tryout fee. On the day of tryouts, arrive early to check in, submit any necessary paperwork, and receive a tryout jersey.

  2. Warm-Up: Expect a warm-up session to get your body ready for the tryout drills and exercises. This can include stretching, light jogging, and ball-handling exercises.

  3. Skill Evaluation: Tryouts involve a series of drills and exercises to evaluate fundamental skills like serving, passing, setting, hitting, blocking, and digging. Coaches will assess your technique, consistency, and adaptability.

  4. Scrimmage: You may be involved in scrimmage matches or game simulations to demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a game-like situation. This helps coaches assess your volleyball IQ, teamwork, and decision-making.

  5. Coach Interaction: Expect to interact with club coaches and staff. They may ask about your background, experience, and goals. It's an opportunity for you to ask questions about the club, its expectations, and the upcoming season.

  6. Competitive Atmosphere: Tryouts are highly competitive, and you'll be surrounded by athletes with varying skill levels. Stay focused, play your best, and maintain a positive attitude.

  7. Feedback: We provide feedback after tryouts. Be open to constructive criticism, as it can help you improve.

  8. Team Selection: We usually notify players that made the team at the end of tryouts, but some offers come later. If you're selected, congratulations! If not, don't be discouraged; there are often opportunities to improve and try out again in the future.

Teams

Gold Team season runs from tryouts and starts competition in December to mid-April, concluding at the ERVA Regional Championships. The teams rankings and dedication will determine if a team can progress into post season season, which culminates in Girls Junior National Championship (GJNC) in July.

Our Gold teams travel further and more often, competing in higher caliber tournaments and power leagues. Tournaments are in places such as Wenatchee, Spokane, Puget Sound, Wenatchee, Arizona, California, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. During Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Presidents weekend, and Spring Break, we travel to 3-day tourneys out of state. Gold Teams may have an option to practice during school and holiday breaks if necessary and gym availability.

Royal Team season runs from tryouts and starts competition in December to mid-April, concluding at the ERVA Regional Championships. They may attend a 3-day tourney depending on age level and caliber of team. There will be 2-3 tourneys a month. There will be no practices during school breaks or holidays unless a tournament is within the break and gym is available.

Red Team season runs from tryouts and starts competition in December (1 Friendship Tourney) to mid-April, concluding at the ERVA Regional Championships. They will enter in 2 tournaments a month and stay  local to Wenatchee, Walla Walla, Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Selah. No practices during school or holiday breaks.

Blue Team season runs from tryouts and starts competition in December (1 Friendship Tourney) to mid-April, concluding at the ERVA Regional Championships. They will enter in 2 tournaments a month and stay local. No practices during school or holiday breaks.

Rise UP Teams are development teams that do not enter tournaments. Attend practices and scrimmages within the club or surrounding local clubs. These teams are offered in the fall for those athletes not playing school ball, and sometimes run during the club season.
